Disappointing Books of 2019

I had a few disappointing reads this year. A majority of them were some of my most anticipated reads of the year. I expected to love them and I was let down. These aren’t my only low rated books of the year. These are the ones I was most disappointed by. They stick out in my mind when I think of disappointing reads.

I figured I would love The Diviners. I had heard so many people in the book community rave about it. However, I found the main character annoying. The use of lingo from the time period was excessive as well. I am a historical fiction reader, so generally that doesn’t bother me. I just felt like it was used without any real purpose. I really don’t plan to continue this series.

There was a lot of hype surrounding this book. It was a story about a witch hunter and a witch being forced into marriage in Paris. My first problem with this one is that it didn’t feel like Paris. This story literally could have happened anywhere. I forgot half the time that it was supposed to be Paris. Secondly, the forced marriage made no sense. I spent a lot of time thinking, “why is this happening.” In the reveal near the end of the book there is a motive behind the force marriage, but it wasn’t a great motive.

I don’t have a lot to say about this one. My first disappointment happened when removing the sticker. Notice the big ugly spot on the front cover. The cast of characters in this were horrible. All of them. Not one likable character to be found. They were grown but it felt like high school drama. Totally disappointing.

This was marketed as “The book to bring back vampires.” My nostalgic heart craved a good vampire story. I was just getting into YA at the start of the vampire craze and I love it. This book did not have vampires until like the last chapter. It was hinted at, but no vampires. That alone disappointed me, among other things. I have already written a full rant-filled review so if you want to check it out click here.

I have similar issues with this book as I did with The Beautiful. I was told it was a monster story. It turned out to be a bad teenage romance. All the character thought of was the love interest. The mystery was not very prevalent. I almost dnfed it, but it was so short I just powered through. I don’t really even remember must of the plot.

So that wraps-up my negative 2019 recap posts. Check back tomorrow for my Completed Series of 2019.
